October First Friday - The Day Wooden Navies Became Obsolete: Newburyport Sailors and the Battle of Hampton Roads

Friday, October 2nd  |  5:30 pm – reception  |  6:30 pm – lecture

Join Capt. Robert Cronin as he explores the 1862 Battle of Hampton Roads, the first clash between ironclad warships in history. Remembered as the day all the world’s navies became obsolete, Cronin will examine the events leading to the battle, the engagement itself, the sinking of the USS Cumberland and the USS Congress, and Newburyport’s connection to the battle through the eyes of the city's sailors.

PLEASE NOTE: The Custom House is a historic structure and is not handicap accessible. Most events take place on the second floor and there is no elevator in the building.
