Friday, November 6th | 5:30 pm – reception | 6:30 pm – lecture
Join author Ken Sheldon for a lecture exploring the career of Captain John Manley, one of the most prominent naval commanders of the American Revolution. Commissioned by George Washington, Manley struck a major early blow against the British by capturing the supply ship Nancy (without firing a shot), delivering critical ordnance to the Continental Army during the siege of Boston. He later took command of the Newburyport-built frigate Hancock, leading high-stakes engagements against the Royal Navy on the open sea. This presentation will examine his tactical successes, his dramatic battles, and his role in launching the early American Navy.
Sheldon recounts Manley’s story in his book Captain John Manley: Patriot, Privateer, and America’s Forgotten First Hero.
